Feeling Swamped? Here’s How to Take Back Control

What to Do When Everything Feels Like Too Much

Let’s be real, running your own business can feel like juggling flaming chainsaws.

Some weeks you’re on fire in flow, in control, crushing goals like a pro. Then suddenly, the wheels wobble. One surprise email or unexpected fire and boom, you’re drowning in tasks, spinning in circles, wondering, “How did I get here?”

Sound familiar? If so, take a breath. Here’s how to shift gears and find your footing again:

1. Get Honest with Yourself

Overwhelm creeps in quietly. You don’t even realize it until you’re deep in reactive mode. The key is catching it early. Pause. Zoom out. Are you working intentionally, or just putting out fires?

2. Ditch the Guilt

Too many high-performers beat themselves up when things slip. Don’t. Overwhelm isn’t failure, it’s feedback. Give yourself some grace and recognize this moment for what it is: an opportunity to reset.

3. Triage Ruthlessly

Not every task deserves your attention right now. What’s mission-critical? What can wait? Get clear. Then execute with focus. Remember, urgency and importance are not the same thing.

4. Delegate or Delay

You don’t have to do it all. Seriously. Hand things off where you can, and unapologetically push non-essentials down the line. Your energy is a finite resource, protect it.

5. Speak Up, Don’t Spiral

Find your sounding board, a coach, mentor, or colleague. Talking things through often untangles the mental knots. Don’t underestimate the power of perspective and accountability.

BONUS MOVES TO BUILD RESILIENCE:

  • Start Your Day with Intention: 10 quiet minutes can change the tone of your whole day. I begin with meditation, followed by a 3-minute cold plunge, clarity unlocked.

  • Say No More Often: Every “yes” to something unimportant is a “no” to what really matters. Cut the noise.

  • Move Your Body: Stress lives in your body. Get it out. Walk, lift, sprint, whatever moves your energy.

  • Let Tech Work for You: Calendar blocking and task management apps aren’t “nice-to-haves.” They’re essential tools. Use them daily.

Here’s the truth: Overwhelm doesn’t mean you’re broken. It means you’re growing. These moments challenge us, but they also shape us. With the right mindset and strategy, you’ll not only bounce back you’ll level up.
